Our Story

The Unlimited Child started with a simple conversation.

Iain Buchan, The Chairman of the Durban based company The Unlimited, was asking his domestic worker, Nester, about her family. She was concerned as her grandchild had failed Grade 2. This got Iain asking some serious questions…

A man of action, Iain met with several education experts and learned that a child’s development starts in their infant years. In South Africa, this development is often the responsibility of crèche caregivers as the majority of young children have working parents.

Reports show that the conditions under which many young children are being cared for in crèches, specially in underprivileged areas, is not conducive to developing their potential. In fact, in many crèches, the overcrowded and uninviting environments are actually detrimental to early childhood development.

With help from academics and early childhood development specialists, Iain launched a corporate social responsibility project in July 2008 through The Unlimited named Operation Abantwana. This launched as a pilot project involving five crèches in Marianhill and the Valley of 1000 Hills. Today this has evolved to become The Unlimited Child.
